VESTURBUGT

COMPETITION, 1ST PRIZE 2017

description

This is a joint competition entry for a new mixed-use development close to the old harbour in Reykjavík. The site used to house a steel factory and shipyard, but has been empty for a decade. The location is a missing piece of the puzzle in connecting the culturally redeveloped harbour Grandi to the old city centre.

The municipal land-use plan allowed for 176 apartments on two separate sites, with shops and services on ground floors facing the harbour and the main street. The two blocks are split into individual buildings divided by narrow pedestrian alleys. The buildings were divided between four architectural firms in order to increase diversity within the building complex and to avoid homogeneity, repetition, and out-of-scale buildings.
